First Meetup! 27th November

I am very pleased to announce that the first London Geo/Mobile Developers Meetup is being hosted by Google at their offices in Victoria. Many thanks to them for offering us a venue.

For the first event we have three exciting presenters:

Yahoo Fire Eagle – Gary Gale (Yahoo! Geo Technologies)
CloudMade/Open Street Map – Nick Black (CloudMade)
Location Based Advertising – Andrew Grill (London Calling)

The presentations are short, around ten minutes, with plenty of time for questions and answers. Afterwards, we also have an hour of networking and social time where hopefully you’ll have plenty on your minds to discuss.

We’re kicking off at 6:00pm @Google HQ, Belgrave House, 76 Buckingham Palace Road, London. SW1W 9TQ. Expect it to last for a couple of hours, and perhaps a few pints at the pub after.

It is free to attend but we do need to know who and how many people are coming, so
I must ask that you RSVP to the event here.

I've a keen interest in LBS in particular as I've clients that work in this arena (we're a rich content provider for them). My interest in coming is to find out more about the technology side of things, where LBS is evolving too and hopefully have a pint :)

I have more of an interest in applications that development (though I do a lot of KML development and some maps work, see for example http://www.kcl.ac.uk/geodata)

I am particularly keen on OSM or geowiki type approaches for developing environmental data. We have nearly completed a project to map the world's dams using this approach and are developing systems to help map and monitor the world protected areas through http://conservation.healthyplanet.org and http://www.wdpa.org. I am keen to see how OSM type approaches could be applied in these areas and would thus like to join you.
